A question we often get asked here at Grove is - ‘How Do I Style My Console Table?’ This is undoubtedly the most difficult answer we can give as there are so many factors at play between style ideals and the purpose of practicality. Before we can offer any guidance, it is of utmost importance that we get a clear image of what the homeowner is looking for. Once the basics are pinned down, the process becomes seamless, and there’s nothing more rewarding than creating a display that you truly love and will admire for years to come.

The first thing to keep in mind when approaching the task of styling a console table, is its placement. Where you place your console will sway how you style it hugely. Whether it’s a hallway, living room, kitchen, or dining room that you’re working on, there’ll be different needs and proprieties to consider.

Once your placement is pinned down, it’ll be much easier for you to approach styling with confidence. Having a clear image of the end goal is imperative when selecting the pieces that will work together to achieve your overall look. With this much in mind, we can then work through the main steps in creating a cohesive display for your home.

  1.  Focal Point

By selecting your focal point early on in the process, it’ll be much easier for you to choose the rest of your ingredients without them conflicting or crowding your space. You may choose a sculpture, a floral arrangement, a painting, or a mirror to take centre stage, but always keep in mind the size of your focal point, relative to the console table you’re styling. We often advise our customers to keep their measurements at hand whilst shopping as you’d be surprised at what sizing limitations you may come across during the process.

You may also wish to choose a focal point which is suitable to the area that you’re decorating. For example, a mirror works wonderfully in an entrance hall, whereas a painting would be more inviting in a living room. There are no exact rules when it comes to decorating, and we always advise choosing pieces you truly love, however suitability in relation to disposition, is something worth considering.

  1. Lighting

Choosing the correct lighting for your console is another element of high importance. The only thing to keep in mind here is, again, sizing. For a smaller, more dainty console table, you may opt for a pair of wall lights to frame your display, or perhaps, a singular lamp for a softer look. If you’re styling a larger console table, a pair of lamps would work best, but will also create an element of balance for everything else that will be incorporated along your styling journey.

If you’re looking to get very technical in terms of design, your choice of lighting can be carefully chosen to mirror other elements of texture and various shapes found within the rest of your decor. For example, a lamp with a bulbous base could lift your look by complimenting the structure of your console table, or a linen shade could echo the warmth of your sofa fabric.

  1. Underneath the Console

Adding a level of balance underneath the console is where your look will really start coming together. What you choose to place here may also be determined by positioning, as mentioned previously. If your space is more functional, a pair of baskets placed below your console will offer an extra level of storage, whilst remaining effortlessly stylish. If you’re on a more decorative journey however, books and interesting objects will look more suitable here.

Whether or not you have shelving underneath your console table could also limit the freedom you have, but if you keep the principles of balance in mind, you’re sure to create a level of wow in your display.

  1. Accessorising and Personalisation

Unless you’re planning for your space to represent that of a showroom, we feel it is important to leave room for a sense of life and living. By adding accessories and small personalisations which are meaningful to you, you can create a very rounded look for your console table. Adding photo frames, or a trinket tray you picked up from your travels, will always add visual sentiment to your space and make a mark like no other.

No matter how big or how small your project is, it is important to create a display that is perfectly fitting to you and your lifestyle. By following these simple steps on your decorating journey, there is no doubt you’ll be able to create a display that is perfectly stylised, with an added hint of character.
